Conscious Birth

My Birth Philosophy

During my career as a doula, and then as a Nurse-Midwife, I have been amazed over and over again at the strength women exude during the birth process.  Women’s bodies know how to birth babies.  It is what our bodies were meant to do.  But today we live in a society that often pushes away our instincts, making us overthink things that should come naturally.  Part of the reason for this is due to the fact that we expect things to happen quickly so we’ve lost our patience.  Another reason is because most of us do not live in large communities where we see other women give birth or learn from our elders’ experiences.   We have little experience with birth before we give birth ourselves, leading to an intellectual understanding of it, rather than an instinctual knowledge of the journey. 

I believe that birth is a natural process that often requires no intervention.  There are many ways to feel comfortable while experiencing the pressure and intensity of labor without medications. 

I believe that every woman has the right to experience birth the way she and her partner want.  Her birth team is there to facilitate her success, providing constant support and encouragement. 

I believe knowledge is power.  You can only make informed decisions and give informed consent with knowledge. 

I believe that birth is a family affair.  Many dads/partners are experiencing birth for the first time.  They need to be supported also.

During my class, you will gain the confidence to labor without pain medications.  We will go over the physical process of labor and birth, comfort measures, and practice labor simulations.  My breastfeeding class will give you all of the information you need so that you will know what to expect when your baby is born. You won’t need to take a separate breastfeeding class!  You will learn the power of visualizations and affirmations to aid you in labor, breastfeeding, and life. 

These are some of the words that come to my mind when I think of birth.  This journey is life altering, whether it’s your first birth or your third.  It is my hope to offer you the information and knowledge you need to make choices so that you can have the amazing, satisfying birth you deserve.
